Components of an Effective Reading Program

This brief contains five sections, one for each of the five essential components of reading as identified by the National Reading Panel (see National Institute of Child Health and Human Development [NICHD], 2000): 1) phonemic awareness, 2) phonics, 3) fluency, 4) vocabulary, and 5) comprehension. Each section of the brief is organized by a) defor components, (b) key findings of the research, (c) guidelines for assessment, (d) considerations for instructional design, (e) key elements of instructional strategies, areferences and links for additional resources.
