FCTD News: Assistive Technology and the IEP
Assistive technology experts always tell families and teachers to get AT
into a child's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Not only does
the law - IDEA - mandate that AT be considered, but it's simply the
best way to ensure that AT assessments and trials are conducted, and
that progress is tracked.
However, it's not enough, maintain Sherry Purcell and Debbie Grant,
to advise IEP teams to consider assistive technology. To be effective
and to avoid expensive errors, they counsel, AT needs to be tied to
specific curriculum goals.
The Family Center on Technology & Disability's June newsletter
features an interview with Dr. Purcell and Ms. Grant, long-time experts
in the educational AT field. Co-authors of several books on using AT to
meet curriculum needs, these California-based educators have much solid
advice to offer.
