    • Camp Buckskin has been helping young people with ADD, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers, or those who may be adopted to learn and grow for more than 50 years. We provide a structured, consistent, and supportive environment with quality instruction in traditional camp and some academic activities. Our featured Personal Growth Program works to enhance social awareness and improve social skills. Our parents are most interested in helping their children make and maintain friendships, so we work each day to accomplish this goal. In addition, we strive to improve problem solving/coping skills to help our campers become more self reliant and take on increased responsibility for themselves.

    • Hi, I am "Mom" to Lauren, who is a 24 year-old young woman with severe, multiple disabilities. Lauren requires care in every aspect of her life. This blog will be a journal of the struggles and joys of providing care for Lauren. Since she self-directs the services she receives and requires my help in order to make that possible, this blog will also point out the issues, promise, and problems inherent in self-direction from the perspective of a primary caregiver. I will provide information and advice to others who care for or about someone with developmental disabilities as well as offer insights into participating in self-direction. Self-Directed Respite Information - Webinar - Mar. 1 & 3, 2010

Primary Caregivers of Developmental Disabilities Program Waiver Participants:  Changes are coming to the way our families receive respite services beginning April 1, 2010.  The changes are meant to address some of the problems with the current system like taxes and liability issues.  Families will be offered three choices in how their respite is provided. 

One of the ways (self-directed respite) is through a company called Acumen.  Acumen will be providing informational calls and computer sessions regarding this method of respite care throughout the next few weeks in order to address all the questions we may have.

Monday, March 1st and Wednesday, March 3rd will be available as webinars as well.  You can participate on just the phone portion on those two dates or follow the instructions below to sign up for the webinar portion.

If you are interested in participating in the webinar option, it is necessary to notify Acumen in advance of the session.  Please send an RSVP email to RSVPline@acumen2.net and Acumen will respond with how to connect to the internet portion of the presentation.  You will also need a phone line for the audio portion of the Internet presentation.  If you have multiple people accessing a webinar from one computer please only have one person RSVP to Acumen for access.

Location Matters for families caring for a child with special health care needs

    • In the United States, caring for a child with special health care needs usually means higher medical expenses for a family - particularly for low-income families, who spend a disproportionally large share of their income on their child's care. Yet the amount of financial burden for these families also depends on their state of residence, according to Paul T. Shattuck, PhD, professor of social work at Washington University in St. Louis [Pediatrics, 124: S435-S442].

      "The percentage of low-income families in a given state with out-of-pocket expenses that exceeded 3 percent of their income varied considerably according to state and ranged from 5 percent to 25. 8 percent (District of Columbia and Montana, respectively). Families living in states with more generous Medicaid and State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) benefits report less financial burden," Dr. Shattuck said.

    • Research has shown that families raising children with disabilities face exceptionally high rates of financial hardship, which can have a negative effect on the children's well-being.
