Research in Developmental Disabilities, Volume 30, Issue 1, p.158-178 (2009)Layperson Summary:
Intensive applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy may help young children with autism learn to function normally.
This review article describes the research on ABA therapy, TEACCH and the Colorado Health Sciences Project as treatments for autism. ABA can be helpful for children who are up to 7 years-of-age at intake. More research is needed, especially on other forms of psycho-educational autism therapy. In the case of ABA therapy, more research is needed to find out what aspects of ABA therapy are most helpful. Research should also be done to find out what symptoms are traits that predict a good or a bad outcome with ABA therapy.
