Portable listening devices -- now a decade old and ubiquitous among American children -- are being used to listen to audio books, in part shifting comprehension from the written to the spoken word.

If an Arizona state lawmaker has his way, disabled students will have easier access to large-print, audio, and Braille textbooks. HB 2441, sponsored by Andrew Tobin, R-Paulden, would require the State Board of Education to designate a list of alternative media producers to these specialized textbooks. Many believe that these resources would give disabled students (particularly students with dyslexia) access to a wider variety of education materials.

Bookshare.org believes that people with print disabilities should have the same ease of access to books and periodicals that people without disabilities enjoy. The Bookshare.org library provides print disabled people in the United States with legal access to over 36,050 books and 150 periodicals that are converted to Braille, large print or digital formats for text to speech audio.

The program, provided by the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, puts textbooks on CDs. Josh's old school, Alcorn Middle, is one of 23 in the Midlands to have it for students with disabilities.
