The focus of this seminar is to introduce participants to key aspects of effective mathematics instruction, with an emphasis on the needs of struggling learners, and link these practices to effective reading practice and Response to Intervention/Problem Solving. In this seminar participants will:
- Self-reflect on their beliefs about the ability of struggling learners to learn mathematics and their preparedness for teaching these students mathematics within RtI.
- Identify several important learning characteristics and curriculum issues that make learning mathematics difficult for struggling learners.
- Identify powerful mathematics teaching techniques for struggling learners and how participants can apply one or more of them in their teaching.
- Visualize similarities between effective reading/literacy practices and effective mathematics practices for struggling learners.
